Beadboard Paneling from New England Classic

Posted

Beadboard PanelingPaint, wallpaper, and faux effects can be beautiful. But for adding classic character to a room, nothing beats the look of wood.  Wood walls are the best way to warm up a house. But with so many choices available, how to start? Here is some advice to get you started.

Are you wondering if beadboard paneling would be appropriate for your home?

Beadboard was the late-1800s version of Sheetrock, used when you couldn't afford plaster. There are several kinds. Narrow-plank bead board panel works best in service areas such as baths, kitchens, mudrooms, and enclosed porches. Wider planked bead board panels are a little dressier and more sophisticated. It can go in service areas, too, but also in dens, libraries, powder rooms, and breakfast rooms. Both narrow- and wide-plank styles lend themselves beautifully to ceilings.

Should bead board be painted, stained or left natural?

In today's current designer schemes, beaded board is usually painted, but it looks good stained or natural too. It has great versatility. You can cover whole walls with it or use it as wainscoting up to chair-rail height. New England Classic has several painted and stained color options, and can even paint it a custom color for you. We also offer samples we can mail you to ensure that you are choosing the right wood and stain finish.  These are available for order on our website.

Are there casual applications for paneling?

Not all beadboard has to run vertically. Using horizontal planks is a way to make a paneled room look relaxed. Whitewashing the planks creates a very beach like feel.
